A Solemn Event Dedicated to the 120th Anniversary of Musa Jalil Held at KUMU

At Batyraly Sydykov Kyrgyz-Uzbek International University, the Faculty of History and Philology, Department of Russian Philology, hosted a solemn event marking the 120th anniversary of the birth of the renowned Tatar Soviet poet and hero Musa Jalil. This annual celebration has become a cherished tradition of the university.

The event was opened by the Rector of KUMU, Doctor of Economics and Professor Abdilbayet Mamassydykov, who congratulated the participants and emphasized the significance of Musa Jalil’s literary legacy. In his address, he noted that the university systematically trains Russian-speaking educators and closely cooperates with the Russian House in Osh through joint projects. The rector also encouraged young people to study foreign languages as a key to professional and cultural growth.
The head of the Russian House in Osh, Dmitry Avram, expressed gratitude for the ongoing cooperation and highlighted the importance of the event. As part of the program, participants of the “Russian Teacher Abroad” project were awarded letters of appreciation.
The celebration continued with video presentations about Musa Jalil and readings from his works, including excerpts from the famous Moabit Notebooks, which reflect his struggle against fascism.
The event was held under the motto: “Kyrgyzstan and Russia: History, Friendship, Cooperation!”, underscoring the commitment to strengthening bilateral educational and cultural ties.
Background
Musa Jalil (real name Musa Mustafovich Zalilov) was born in 1906. He began writing poetry at the age of 13 and became one of the most prominent Tatar Soviet poets. During the Great Patriotic War, he volunteered for the front and, while in captivity, organized an underground anti-fascist group. In Berlin’s Moabit prison, he wrote the celebrated Moabit Notebooks. In 1944, he was executed by the Nazis and later posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
